The Lilypond is a nocturnal, ultramarine Eden where sensuality and absurdity reign without apology. Nude figures drift among lotus blossoms and koi, serenaded by a floating guitarist, served champagne in a drifting boat, watched by swans and guarded by a giant dragonfly.

By collaging photographic and painted fragments, The Lilypond reimagines Monet’s still pond as a symbolic theatre of hedonism and transcendence. It proposes a utopia where pleasure becomes a form of truth-telling, where every presence, human, animal, or elemental, is invited to reveal its hidden meanings, and where the boundaries between fantasy and reality dissolve into a single, luminous night.

Carolyn Ridsdale

Carolyn Ridsdale is an award-winning artist who creates mixed media collages of breath-taking detail. Her works are a whimsical call to adventure and a celebration of life, while never forgetting its attendant shadows. She weaves together historic and contemporary material, juxtaposing visual references with wit and insight that can be contemplated and appreciated by the viewer repeatedly.

Ridsdale finds inspiration in mankind’s deepest myths and cultural expressions from Ancient Greek sculpture to Persian carpets to the flash of today’s celebrity culture, and in the beauty of the natural world, from the oceans to the forests and the human form.

She has a degree in English Literature from Curtin University where her artistic journey began. Her unique visual style has evolved from the written word via theatre design, graphic design and underground comics, but her love of strong narrative themes remains evident throughout her body of work.

Ridsdale spent twenty years living and working in London and Amsterdam before returning home to Sydney in 2008 to raise her family. However, her work remains in high demand across Europe.
