This multi-layered collage portrait, built from torn fragments of old master prints, illuminated manuscripts, gold leaf and hand-painted papers glows in bronze, bruised yellow and flushed pink.
At it’s centre is a serene yet commanding woman holding a hooded peregrine falcon amid a stylised, almost heraldic forest.
In medieval and Renaissance Europe, falconry was one of the rare forms of hunting permitted to noblewomen. It was a living symbol of wealth, precision and restrained power in a world that offered them little else. Here the bird on her gloved wrist becomes an emblem of a femininity that has always been adored, armoured and underestimated.
The seemingly gentle title “A Woman’s Face is Always Good” is quietly reclaimed. Her face is good because it is formidable, because it looks straight back at us, because it still hold the falcon.
