Charcoal and ash screenprinted onto handmade paper (recycled artworks, lakewater, foraged plant matter from site)

This image was created following my residency on the Tasman Peninsula, during which I experienced a brush with death. When I returned home, I spent much of my time healing, and walking in the bush around my home. It was during these quiet encounters that I slowly captured this photograph, looking upward through the branches toward the sky. This period was deeply nourishing, and I gathered natural materials such as leaves, bark, and twigs, which later became part of the handmade paper. The image itself was developed with rainwater I collected during this time, along with caffenol. The resulting work sheds light on a profoundly healing period after a life-changing event.

Claire Paul

Claire Paul is an early career artist whose practice applies long-exposure pinhole photography, foraging practices and screen-printing technologies to embrace a deep observation of ecologies, capturing longer moments of time where contemplation and connection take place. Through the conscious selection of materials and processes, she engages in a collaboration with the environment with less attention paid towards achieving technically rendered results and a fascination lying within the unpredictable outcomes of her practice. Emphasising methodologies which translate a slowness resonating with the natural world, Paul’s practice seeks to promote a more mindful presence where observation and grounding is found and fostered.
